From January 1, 2024, vape shops in the Netherlands will not be allowed to sell flavored vape or e-liquid such as peach, mango or mint, and only tobacco-flavored vape products will be legally sold. The Dutch government hopes the measure will prevent teenagers from picking up a nicotine habit and then switching to combustible cigarettes.
Before the flavor ban officially came into effect, vape enthusiasts in the Netherlands had been frantically stocking up on flavored vapes. Emil Hart of the Dutch Cigarette Trade Association said: “You can see consumers stocking up as much as possible in specialty stores, especially those switching from cigarettes to vapes, who are worried about not being able to buy flavored vapes in the future. “
Hart believes that this measure in the Netherlands will be counterproductive and may cause people who smoked cigarettes before turning to vaping to be tempted to return to traditional cigarettes. But many vape users have been buying their vapes online from sellers in France, Spain or China, or in brick-and-mortar stores in neighboring Belgium and Germany.
